A tool used by wine lovers, for letting red wines "breath," and develop their flavors and character. The wine is "decanted" into the decanter about 30 minutes or so before serving, and upto several hours for very tannic red wines, or for pouring the wine off of its sediment, if there is any. Decanters are not typically used for white wines, because of their not containing any tannin or sediment, because of how they are made. Monte D. Young 05:30, 6 July 2011 (EST)
